Being Creative: Conscious or Subconscious

I recently picked up the book ‘The Creative Act: A Way of Being’, and in it, Rick mentions that creativity is something everyone partakes on a daily basis, whether they believe they are creative or not. It made me think,

“Is creativity something that is meant to be activated at a moment’s notice  like muscles during a workout or is it meant to work subconsciously without giving it a second thought?”

Me (around 7:15PM yesterday)

There’s a reason for it to qualify under both because on one hand, the creative ideas come the easiest when we allow our minds to wander. A good example would be when one gets ideas in the shower, or when they’re about to go to bed. On the other hand, it seems like creativity can be called on demand and an example of this would be people who create art for a living or when one enters the ‘flow state’.

I don’t want to sound like I am “woke” or anything like that but it seems as though creativity is talked about like it’s an abstract concept. It very well may because no two people have the same process when it comes to gaining creative ideas. One thing I think we should keep in mind is that we cannot grow creatively if we aren’t bringing our ideas to life.

Going back to the book, Rick expresses how ideas will always find their way into the world. He went on to say how if someone comes up with an idea, writes it down, but does not work to bring the idea to life, the idea will be given life by somebody else. This isn’t to say that the other person “stole” the idea but rather, it was the idea’s time to be brought to life.

The funny thing is that I’ve experienced it firsthand. I waited around for the “right time” to start bringing my ideas to life but by then, someone else had begun putting out creations based on that idea. Then, I’ll tell myself, “well since they have used the idea before I can, it’s too late.”

There’s only so much inspirational content one can consume before they have to start getting real with themselves. There is no way to turn back the clock, and no one will live this life for you. Anything that is worthwhile, won’t be easy or else everyone would be doing it.

I think the belief that one will just magically start doing what they’re passionate about at some point will result in the person living an unfulfilling life. Getting to where one wants to be requires deliberate effort and nothing is going to change that. Not trying because you believe you won’t be good initially is counter productive.

Any type of effort is progress. You can gather all the resources, read all the self-improvement books, and watch motivational content, you cannot multiply by 0 and expect to get a good result. I have a song that I believe fits the subject of the blog, it is ‘Eyes’ by Jinsang.

A bientot!
